A. Mitchell Palmer (1872-1936) was an American politician, lawyer, and public official who served as the Attorney General of the United States from 1919 to 1921 under President Woodrow Wilson. He is best known for his role in the Red Scare of 1919-1920, during which he oversaw the Palmer Raids, a series of government actions targeting suspected radicals and anarchists. Palmer's aggressive approach to combating perceived threats from communism and anarchism led to significant civil liberties violations and the deportation of many immigrants. Despite his popularity among some for his hardline stance, many others criticized his tactics. After leaving office, he continued to be involved in politics but never regained the same level of influence.
